In a world where the journey to success can often feel solitary, having a network of supportive and empowering women can make all the difference. This past year, I had the privilege of celebrating a significant milestone with a dear friend and inspiring mentor—Gail Day. Her wisdom, kindness, and unwavering support have profoundly impacted my life, and her influence extends far beyond mere friendship.
We first crossed paths many years ago through work. During times of self-doubt, Gail's thoughtful advice and gentle guidance were invaluable. Whenever I expressed my insecurities, her reassuring words and constructive feedback encouraged me to challenge my limiting beliefs and recognize my potential. No matter what crazy endeavor I brought up, she reassured me that my dreams were not only valid but achievable.
I also stand in awe of Gail's labor of love in establishing the Working on Womanhood (WOW) program, which has expanded from Chicago to national, and stands as a testament to the power of her vision of women owning their stories and never dimming their light. Her commitment to building resilience in young women facing great odds reflects her broader philosophy of uplifting others. WOW was one of my first publishing clients, and continues to be a collaboration I cherish deeply. Witnessing the program's success has reinforced my belief that one person’s faith in others can spark a cascade of positive change.
Celebrating Wins
Collaborating with Gail on her personal memoir—chronicling her family's experiences as her mother battled dementia—was an honor. At the same time, she launched her private business, Cocoon Consulting. Supporting her work on this deeply personal manuscript was a chance to thank her for her role as both a mentor and a supportive friend during rocky times.
Mentorship, like true friendship, is powerful. In a world where women compete more than they empower each other, and often face challenges in being heard and valued, building networks of support that breathe life into our dreams is crucial. I’m grateful for all of the women in my life, my Momma, Hattie Belle Kirby (resting in love), my beautiful big sisters Angie and Sandra, my girlfriends (who I don't get to see often enough), my naysayers (who strengthen me), my family who believe in me, and the mentors who have and continue to bless my journey. Each of them, in their unique way, has shown me that we must keep living, keep trying new things, keep getting up, and remember that possibilities are within reach. The journey is ongoing, and I am thankful to know genuine women who support other women—women like my good friend, Gail Day. ❤️
